Luncheon of the Boating Party

Luncheon of the Boating Party depicts an outdoor scene along the banks of the Seine, in which Renoir’s friends take center stage. The riverside setting and vibrant color palette, along with the lighthearted group of Parisians enjoying themselves, captures the momentary pleasure and convivial atmosphere of a picnic. Familiar faces from Renoir’s social circle are prominently featured: Mademoiselle Legrand depicted midway down the table on your left is the sister of Alphonsine Fournaise, owner of The Restaurant Fournaise where many members would spend time together. Renoir returns to her in other works including A Girl with a Watering Can and On the Terrace (La Promenade), both in 1876.
