The Gleaners

The Gleaners, by Jean-François Millet (1814-1875), is one of the most famous works of French Realism. Millet painted it between 1857 and 1859 in a small village of northern France. At the time this humble scene depicting poor peasants gleaning the fields was not recognized as an important work, but eventually The Gleaners took its place in art history and became an icon of the French 19th century.
