$39.50$1,596.00

The Third of May 1808, painting by Francisco Goya depicting the Spanish resistance to Napoleon’s armies during the occupation of 1808 in the Peninsular War. A bloody ending to the popular uprising at Madrid on May 2, 1808, inspired Goya to paint one of his greatest works of art. Commissioned by Spain’s King Charles IV, it shows a firing squad preparing to shoot a group of Spanish civilians and was intended to commemorate Spanish resistance to Napoleon’s armies.
