David Garrick with His Wife Eva-Maria Veigel

German actress Eva-Maria Veigel was a large presence in the life of David Garrick, the 18th- and 19th-century actor who once dominated London’s theatrical scene. In this painting by William Hogarth, Veigel is standing at an angle to Garrick, who faces away from her — not out of a sense of disinterest but because he’s busy repairing the wig that she has placed on his head. The absence of his wedding ring suggests a separation between husband and wife.
