The Sleeping Gypsy

Rousseau was a self-taught painter who had no formal artistic training. He worked in a variety of jobs, including toll collector, nurse, and army officer. During his later years he did receive some recognition for his paintings but little for his personal needs. He was often forced to sell his work at very low prices or give it away as gifts. The Sleeping Gypsy was among the few works sold during his lifetime. It is owned by The Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
